The regional advocacy group for the North East of England’s subsea sector. The group promotes the region’s innovation and excellence in the development of subsea technologies and solutions.

 

About North East England’s Subsea Sector:

  • North East England's subsea sector is made up of about 50 supply chain companies.
  • It currently generates a combined turnover in excess of £1.5 billion a year, accounting for 20% of the value of the manufacturing sector in North East England
  • It supports more than 15,000 jobs
  • The reach of North East England's subsea sector is global, with a presence in key subsea markets such as West Africa, South America, Gulf of Mexico and the Far East

Subsea North East

In 2007 a number of senior executives from the major subsea companies based in North East England came together under the banner of Subsea North East with the following objectives:

  • To promote the North East of England as a world class centre for offshore technologies and solutions
  • To highlight the leading role the subsea sector in the North East of England plays in the global offshore oil & gas industry
  • To encourage closer collaboration across the entire sector in the region
  • To showcase some of the businessess, which are leading subsea developments around the world
  • To demonstrate the importance of the sector to the North East of England
  • To highlight some of the future projects and business opportunities for the sector

In addition to promoting the sector worldwide, the group aims to address issues around skills, research and technology. This resulted in the establishment of MSc in Subsea Engineering & Management at Newcastle University.

  • Subsea North East Executive Group consists of 13 of the leading subsea businesses in North East England
  • 2013 turnover reported at £700 million forecast to rise to £950 million in 2014
  • Will employ a total of 170 apprentices by end 2014
  • All businesses trade internationally
  • At least 50% of turnover is expected to major oil and gas markets globally

About the UK Subsea industry & General Facts

Subsea technology, which involves highly sophisticated equipment used from surface to seabed and which operates remotely under the ocean, provides a viable and safe way of recovering hard to reach or marginal reserves. Through subsea tie back projects to existing platforms, the use of innovative subsea technologies means life extension of many offshore field developments can be implemented. In addition subsea technologies are used in many deepwater projects around the globe where access to reserves is difficult due to water depths. The

UK subsea supply chain is at the forefront in assisting these field developments to move forward and now has an enviable reputation for the provision of new technologies in the sector.

For the subsea industry in the UK, this is an exciting and challenging time and is now one of the fastest growing sectors for the economy. The UK subsea sector has grown by 40% during three years.
